Trauma & Learning
Thursday, January 22
Workshop Leader: Kevin Spencer
Workshop Grade Levels: K-12
Teachers play an important role in recognizing the signs of trauma. As
a result, there is an urgent need for educators to be knowledgeable of
effective classroom strategies that will assist them in creating a traumasensitive learning environment. This professional training provides
participants with research-based, interactive, arts-based interventions that
can be used immediately in their teaching practice.
Imaginary Journeys Through
Movement and Sound
Wednesday, February 18
Workshop Leader: Marcia Daft
Workshop Grade Levels: K-2
Learning in early childhood crosses traditional boundaries – it relies
on integrating listening, imagining and moving to create multi-sensory
learning environments. In this workshop, K through Grade 2 educators
learn to lead Imaginary Journeys designed to teach these skills. These
Journeys combine classroom instruments (such as a maraca, xylophone,
or hand drum), storytelling, and rhythmic movement into an educational
structure. This structure is used to teach story sequencing, spatial
reasoning, number concepts, and other content from language arts,
mathematics, and science. Students document their experiences and
their learning through the creation of story maps. The following science
concepts will be integrated into this workshop: the water cycle, the plant
cycle, and the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly.
